Alberto García-Alix - Elena Mar, odalisque in my yard
Biografía del Artista: Alberto García-Alix was born on March 22, 1956 in León. At the age of eleven, he moved with his family to live in Madrid, where he currently resides. His first negatives date back to 1976. In the early eighties he held his first solo exhibitions in Madrid galleries such as Galería Buades and Galería Moriarty, and in other international galleries such as the Portfolio Gallery in London. During the first edition of PhotoEspaña, in 1998, he held a major retrospective exhibition, which was a huge success with the public and critics. He received the National Photography Award from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 1999, at which time he began working with the Juana de Aizpuru galleries in Spain and Kamel Mennour in France. Between 2003 and 2006 he lived in Paris where he created a video trilogy alternating photographic and filmed images that represents the artist's foray into the video format, a discipline that he continues to develop today. In 2009 he presented a retrospective exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, as well as at the Ullens Center in Beijing and at the Maison de la Photographie in Moscow. Recently, he has had exhibitions at the Maison Européene de la Photographie in Paris, at the Photographers' Gallery in London, at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in León and at Tabacalera Promoción del Arte in Madrid. His work can be found in major international collections such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Spain); Fonds Nationales d'Art Contemporain (France) or Deutsche Börse (Germany), among others. García-Alix has combined his photographic activity with that of an editor, being the founder of the cultural magazine “El Canto de la Tripulación” (1989 to 1997), and more recently co-founder of the publishing house Cabeza de Chorlito, together with Frédérique Bangerter, a label under which he has published some of his most recent creations: El paraíso de los creers (2011); Diaporamas (2012); MOTO (2015) and Motorcycle Family Circus (2016).
