‘S.L. His work (1974-1980) ’

The first solo exhibition by Ángela García Codoñer (Spain, 1944) at the Galería Freijo in Madrid focuses on her series Labores , produced between 1974 and 1980. The title of this series, which emerged during the last years of Franco’s regime, refers to the ambiguous profession of the work to which women were dedicated: household chores such as embroidery, patchwork or dressmaking, traditionally considered feminine tasks and associated throughout the history of art with the category of crafts, a genre inferior to that of painting. Through this series, García Codoñer appropriates these symbols of female work (fabrics, matrices, patterns, embroidery, etc.) and transfers them to the medium of painting, enlarging the grids and converting them into a geometric plot, an abstract construction that could remind us in the digital age of a pixel grid.
