‘Vanitas’

“Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas”. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. From this phrase of Ecclesiastes, the National Photography Award winner Juan Manuel Castro Prieto creates a work that investigates the fleeting nature of existence, the fragility of memory and the deterioration of one’s own territory. The mortal condition of the human being becomes the central axis of the exhibition and of the three series that comprise it: 'Extraños', a symbolic, metaphorical and intimate photograph spread over two decades and presented in a striking circular format; 'Paisajes efímeros', polyptychs with a glass layer that represent impressive decadent landscapes; and 'Cabinet of curiosities', the series of colour still lifes that draw directly from historical pictorial currents but also from the memories of his childhood, through significant objects photographed in places where no one lives anymore.
