On Thursday, September 10, Camara Oscura opens its second solo exhibition of master photographer Roger Ballen (New York, USA, 1950) as part of APERTURA Madrid Gallery Weekend.

Roger Ballen lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and essential photographers of the 21st century. The son of a Magnum photo editor, he worked as a geologist and mining consultant before embarking on his own photographic career, documenting small villages in rural South Africa and their isolated inhabitants. His early work is clearly influenced by documentary photography, but since the early 1990s he has been developing a style that he calls “documentary fiction.”
