‘The only show is the one who expects’

Tiago Baptista's work reflects the relationships established between the painter, the observer, and the moment of painting and what is presented. Faced with the problem of inhabiting a world full of meaning, Tiago Baptista's work is nourished by the tension existing between the moment of painting, the figures and forms represented, but also language and meaning.

On the occasion of this exhibition, Ana Anacleto, curator, writes: “Working with pre-existing images, which can come from a wide variety of sources (from art history to comics; from advertising to photography; from punk, pop and DIY culture; to his own visual experiences), the artist builds a kind of mental models that are the result of the visual relationships that are established in his imagination between these different references. An idea slowly takes shape until it becomes an image, which can end up as a painting.”
