Biografía del Artista: Juliana Cerqueira Leite is a contemporary artist born in Brazil and raised in London. Her work focuses on the relationship between body and space, and how they interact and influence each other. Leite uses a wide range of media to create her works, including sculpture, performance and photography. Her pieces are marked by a minimalist and abstract aesthetic, in which she often uses her own body as a tool for creation. One of Leite's most recognized techniques is clay molding, in which she uses her body as a mold to create abstract forms that are then cast in metal. This technique reflects her interest in exploring the materiality of the body and how it can be used as a tool for creation. Leite’s work has been exhibited in numerous international galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, the Nogueras Blanchard Gallery in Madrid, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, and the Gwangju Biennial in South Korea. Her work has been the subject of several publications and was the subject of a monograph entitled "Julianna Cerqueira Leite: Sobreposições" published in 2018. In the series of drawings, Repetitive motions that make and unmake the world the artist draws the same repeated gesture, overriding its original meaning. Reducing the scale of the gesture to the size of the paper, Cerqueira explores how the repeated action of lifting something (Lift), removing (Stir), knotting (Tie) or unscrewing (Unscrew), give place to strange scribbles or formal records that are reminiscent of the familiar shapes of human vertebrae, bones, or organs. - In the series of drawings Repetitive motions that make and unmake the world, the artist draws in lines the same gesture repeated until it overflows its original meaning. Reducing the scale of the gesture to the size of the paper, Cerqueira verifies how the repeated and accumulated action of lifting something ( Lift, Stir, Tie or Unscrew allow us to structure strange scribbles or formal registers that recall the familiar shapes of the vertebrae, bones or organs of which we are made.
