In Latin, the noun monstrum existed with the meaning “warning from the gods”. It did not refer to any warning, such as one might believe to receive during a dream or nightmare. No; it was the announcement, the warning, of something notable that was to come, linked to a phenomenon outside the regular order of nature, such as the birth of a child with two heads or a deformed animal. These monsters, a sign of bad omens, used to hide for life, in the best of cases. Another part of etymology thinks that the word monster comes from the Latin monstrare, to show, inform, expose,… But monsters are not limited to showing something: they warn of the supernatural, of the future and, ultimately, of the will of the gods against which we can do nothing.
