Ángeles San José - S. T.
Técnica: Mixed technique
Biografía del Artista: Ángeles San José is a prominent Spanish artist born in Madrid in 1961. Her work focuses primarily on painting, although she has also worked in other media such as sculpture and printmaking. Her style is characterized by a focus on the human figure and an exploration of emotions and human psychology. San José studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid and later at the School of Plastic Arts and Design in New York. Since then, she has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. In her work, San José uses a loose and expressive brushstroke technique, creating images that appear to be in constant motion. Her human figures are often presented in introspective and melancholic attitudes, suggesting a concern with emotions and human psychology. She has also explored themes such as motherhood and femininity, as well as social and political issues. Among the awards she has received throughout her career are the National Prize for Plastic Arts of Spain in 1999 and the GAC (Galerías de Arte Contemporáneo) Award for best solo exhibition in 2013. Her work is in numerous public and private collections, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Fundación La Caixa. Ángeles San José (Madrid 1961) is a Spanish painter with a long exhibition career complemented by the receipt of numerous scholarships and awards.1 Career path Graduated in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid in 1984, she began her artistic career exhibiting at the Machón gallery in Madrid. Her work was initially material, but then evolved towards more intimate solutions. Influenced by the German painter Gerard Richter.2 San José uses painting in a very personal way, combining it with photography and drawing to construct monochrome images using minimal elements. San José works in a serial manner in both his pictorial and photographic works. His painting offers subtle nuances in the specific treatment of color and matter, with values that reveal the differences in their chromatic gradation and density.3 In the words of historian Marta González Orbegozo, San José's works are "paintings (resinated?), photographs (regularly typed?)", which emphasize the ambiguity that characterizes his images. A calm work that reflects on the limits of representation and in which the experience of time deposited, accumulated in each project, acquires a material presence that underlines the procedural nature of the proposal. This artwork includes a certificate of authenticity.
