The British artist Simon Callery is the latest addition to the gallery's team of artists. At this 12th edition of APERTURA Madrid Gallery Weekend 2021, they are presenting their first solo exhibition in Spain. Simon Callery's works, called "flat-paintings", place an emphasis on materiality and are often made in direct contact with the environment, taking advantage of the surfaces that make up the landscape. The artist has collaborated with the School of Archaeology at the University of Oxford for many years, using the setting of archaeological excavations as part of his creative process. In these paintings, the canvases are marked, cut, perforated, soaked in tempera paint with great colour saturation and sewn together, revealing all kinds of gaps and cavities. Callery says he works "to make painting what it was again and, as a result, to gain a better awareness of ourselves."
