Joaquín Capa - Lighthouse
Biografía del Artista: Joaquín Capa was born in Santander in 1941. He studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in Madrid, as well as philosophy in Madrid and Rome, architecture in Madrid and sociology of art in Paris. He also researched new engraving techniques at WS Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. He was awarded a scholarship by the Juan March Foundation between 1975 and 1976, and by the Ministry of Culture between 1983 and 1984. He was a visiting professor at the University of Baroda in 1983, 1989 and 1990, where he also won the Grand Prize at the First International Biennial of Bhopal in 1989 and for this reason he maintains a close relationship with the territory of India. He also received the First Prize at the Cairo Biennial in 1994. His work has been exhibited in several cities in Spain, as well as in Utrecht and Maastricht in the Netherlands. Capa is a renowned engraver and painter. He has taught courses at the Barode University of Fine Arts, India, at the Betanzos International Centre for Contemporary Art in A Coruña, and in Mexico, Rome and Slovenia. Among the awards won by the artist are the Grand Prize at the Bhopal Biennial, India, 1989 and the First Prize at the Cairo Biennial, Egypt, 1994. His work can be found in museums and collections around the world, such as the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca, the Municipal Museum of Santander, the National Library of Madrid, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, the National Museum of Prague, the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Los Angeles Country Museum, the LA Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, the National Museum of Egypt, the Siglo XX Collection, the Albert I Royal Library in Brussels, the National Museum of Art in Hanoi and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
