David Nash - Opened Scaled Egg
Biografía del Artista: David Nash is a British contemporary sculptor born on 14 November 1945 in Esher, England. He is known for his wooden sculptures and installations in the natural landscape. He began his art training at the Kingston School of Art and continued at the Chelsea School of Art in London. During his studies, he discovered his love for wood and began working with it as a sculptural material. After graduating in 1967, he travelled to the United States and spent a year at the University of California, Davis, where he was influenced by the works of Robert Arneson and Bruce Nauman. In the 1970s, Nash settled in Wales and began creating large-scale works in nature, using wood and other natural materials. In 1980, he won the John Moores Foundation Prize in Liverpool for his wooden sculpture "Round Tower", which was acquired by the Tate Gallery in London. In 2004, he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to art. Throughout his career, Nash has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Tokyo, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. In 2009, his work was the subject of a retrospective at the Yorkshire Museum of Art. In addition to his work as a sculptor, Nash is also an environmental activist and has planted over 20,000 trees on land he purchased in Wales in the 1970s. He is also a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
David Nash (1945, Esher, UK), with more than 40 years of experience, is considered one of the main representatives of British Land Art. Wood, in particular the tree itself, is his main working tool. For Nash, the use of trees entails enormous symbolism, because due to its density, growth, proliferation, generation and reservation, the tree finds a parallel with life itself and its structure, made up of roots, trunk and branches, alludes to three worlds; the underground, the terrestrial and the celestial. Nash investigates the morphology of the tree, the natural characteristics of its wood, as well as the mutations produced by the hand of man. To do this, the artist has trained as an expert in trees, studying the morphology of each species with which he works, mainly sequoias, oaks, beeches or maples. From these felled trees emerge his “biological sculptures” under the appearance, in this case, of an egg. Open Sculped Egg is one of his emblematic works; an egg that symbolizes life. The work features an open design, inviting light and air to penetrate, which reinforces its connection with nature.
