Evoking the stripe paintings of Morris Louis and Gene Davis, Markus Linnenbrink creates colorful small and large-format drip paintings that sometimes invade the environments in which they are displayed. Color and painting processes are Linnenbrink's primary concerns, and he constructs his compositions using carefully layered drips, resulting in compositions of saturated, bright colors. Sometimes comprised of precise stripes and exquisite lines, his works abound simultaneously with tactile surfaces and pools of resin. His work suggests the spontaneity of a more intuitive process, a sense that is heightened by occasional subtle interruptions. In recent years he has worked especially with the technique of photo-drip, in which he reproduces drip techniques on photographs from his family archive, taking on the layers of resin a new, almost archaeological quality, relating over time distorting memories. He attended the Gesamthochschule in Kassel as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include “too early and always and all over again” at the Patricia Sweetow Gallery in San Francisco, CA; “so here's what you gonna do” at the ft-contemporary in Berlin; “come a little closer” at Kong Tomlinson Contemporary in New York, NY and “BIGOUTREAGEOUSSOUND” at the MaxEstella Gallery in Madrid. Recent group exhibitions include “Local Color” at the San Jose Museum of Art in San Jose, CA; “ROY G BIV” at Waterhouse & Dodd in New York, NY, “out of the office” at the Kunstmuseum Bochum in Germany; “Im raum nichts als farbe sehen” at the Galerie Oqbo in Berlin and the 2010 Beijing Biennial, among others. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Ministry of Culture of The Hague, The Hague, Netherlands; Harvard Business School, Cambridge, MA; Harvard College, Cambridge, MA; The Museum of Chapel Art, Dartmouth College, Hannover, NH; Neue Galerie Museum, Kassel, Germany; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; The San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA and the West Collection, Oaks, PA, among others.
