Madrid and its art fairs
Nov 16, 2021
ARCOmadrid, JustMAD, Art Madrid, DrawingRoom.
From March 26 to 3, Madrid will become the capital of contemporary art thanks to the large number of art events that will be progressively developed following the ARCO fair. From exhibitions, art programs or other fairs that have managed to position themselves on the international scene, the Spanish capital will become a focus of art and a stop for collectors, professionals and art lovers.
Below, we explain the four essential fairs that you must visit:
ARCOmadrid
From February 26th to March 3rd
More than two hundred galleries from 30 countries will meet at the 38th edition of ARCOmadrid, the International Contemporary Art Fair organised by IFEMA. This year, Peru has been selected as the guest country.
In addition to the 165 galleries that make up the General Program, there are also those from the curated sections: “Peru at ARCO”, “Dialogues” and “Opening”.
CollectingARCO is once again promoting collecting with various initiatives, including the recent #mecomprounaobra, the free advisory service during the First Collectors by Fundación Banco Santander fair, and the Young Collectors programme, which brings around thirty young international collectors to Madrid.
The classic International Buyers Program and the Special Guests Program are also back, with 300 collectors and 200 professionals from more than 40 countries.
Likewise, Artsy.net will once again offer the opportunity to explore the Fair and the works present there through its website and app.
Institutional awards will also be presented again, including the 7th Audemars Piguet Award for the production of a work of art at ARCOmadrid, the 12th edition of the Illy SustainArt Award, which recognises the work of Latin American artists born after 1970, from coffee-producing countries; the 3rd Cervezas Alhambra Award for Emerging Art; the 14th BEEP Award for Electronic Art and the 2nd Han Nefkens ARCO Foundation Award for the production of a video art work.
JustMAD
From February 26th to March 3rd
JustMad celebrates its tenth edition, establishing itself as one of the leading avant-garde artists in the emerging art scene in our country.
Directed by Semíramis González and Daniel Silvo, the fair is an exhibition platform that brings together more than 50 galleries from countries around the world such as Brazil, Cuba, Spain, the United States, France, Italy, Portugal and the United Kingdom. It is worth highlighting the significant presence of Portuguese galleries in a specific section (ONLYPortugal), seeking to strengthen the presence of artistic proposals from the neighbouring country and to strengthen the ties between the two countries.
Art Madrid
From February 26th to March 3rd
Art Madrid celebrates its fourteenth edition at the Galería de Cristal in CentroCentro Cibeles, with more than 40 national and international galleries and nearly 200 artists, both emerging and established.
This year, the wide and varied Art Madrid offering stands out for its increasingly international character and the greater contemporaneity of the artistic selections. The fair also reinforces its ongoing commitment to young creators and the most current forms of creation, as demonstrated by the high number of artists under 40 years of age (63), the selection of Rubén Martín de Lucas as Guest Artist or the thematic line of the Parallel Programme.
In addition, a wide range of educational and cultural activities are carried out in parallel.
DrawingRoom
From February 26th to March 3rd
The fourth edition of Drawing Room is here, the only contemporary drawing fair in Spain, with a programme that brings together numerous national and international gallery owners.
The Santa Bárbara Palace, designed by architect Juan de Madrazo y Kuntz, will host the fourth edition of Drawing Room Madrid. Located at Calle de Hortaleza, 87, it is a palace-house on the south side of the Plaza de Santa Bárbara in Madrid, in the epicentre of art, fashion and gastronomy in Madrid. A rationalist building from the second half of the 19th century with bright rooms that will be filled with art for the occasion.
This fourth edition of the competition is presented with a smaller but more specialised gallery programme. There will be a total of 20 national and international galleries – selected by a committee of experts – from Argentina, Belgium, Spain, Japan and Portugal. Among the participating galleries in 2019 will be Gallery KITAI (Tokyo, Japan), Galería Art Nueve (Murcia), Galería de Arte Artizar (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), La Casa Amarilla (Zaragoza), Ogami Press (Madrid), Galería Silvestre (Madrid), Galería Lucía Mendoza (Madrid), Yoko Uhoda Galery (Belgium) and Galería Siboney (Santander), among others.
